Call from Afar
Electroacoustic Audiovisual Composition
Sound moves through water differently than it does through air.
Deeper. Slower. It lingers.
The inspiration for Call from Afar began beneath the surface. On a sailing trip, through a hydrophone, I heard the voices of whales—low, resonant, ancient. Not just sounds, but echoes. Not just calls, but memory.
Whales have been singing for over 50 million years. Their voices carry the weight of time, moving through oceans as if the water itself remembers. In their songs, we can hear both the vastness of the sea and the fragile threads of life within it.
This piece is woven from those sounds, as whale calls blend in various tones. Call from Afar is a reflection of what endures and what fades. In this piece, I weave these whale calls into a sonic narrative, inviting audiences to experience their mystique and emotional depth. This piece is not merely a musical expression; it is an ecological call to action—a tribute to these magnificent beings and the ecosystems they inhabit. Through music, I hope to bridge the connection between humanity and nature, past and future, inspiring reflection and a renewed commitment to safeguarding our planet.
Whale songs travel for miles, but eventually dissolve into the depths.
So do our voices. So do we.
But while they last, they matter.
This is not just music.
It is a reminder to listen—
To the ocean.
To the planet.
Before the echoes fade.
